A significant number of acute lower back injuries—including painful muscle strains and herniated discs—happen during a single, preventable moment: lifting something incorrectly.

The lower back acts as a fulcrum when you bend over. Lifting a 10 kg box while bending at the waist can place hundreds of kilos of pressure on your lower spine.
The Golden Rules of Safe Lifting
1. Think Before You Lift Assess the load. Is it too heavy or awkward? If so, ask for help or use a dolly. Clear your path before you pick up the object.
2. The Squat Lift Never bend at your waist with straight legs. Instead, stand close to the object with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and squat down, keeping your back straight and your chest lifted.
3. Keep it Close Hold the object as close to your body as possible. The further away you hold a weight, the more strain it puts on your spine.
4. Lift with Your Legs Your leg muscles (quadriceps and glutes) are much larger and stronger than your back muscles. Push up with your legs to stand up, keeping your back straight.
5. Avoid Twisting This is a common mistake! Never twist your spine while holding a heavy object. If you need to turn, pivot with your feet.
Protecting your spine requires mindfulness. By turning these lifting mechanics into daily habits, you can drastically reduce your risk of a spinal injury.
